Crafting Connections: New Year Piñata Handicraft Workshop by DiverCity
🌍Event Recap
On the afternoon of 20 February, during the Chinese New Year holiday, the Crafting Connections: New Year Piñata Handicraft Workshop!
Students of various schools, ages and backgrounds came together for an afternoon of fun games, colourful handicrafts, heartfelt conversations, and warm friendships. We were honoured to be joined by an incredible lineup of guests from around the world, Germany, Philippines, Venezuela, UK, Belgium, Indonesia, Austria, Turkey, Jordon, USA and more, each bringing their unique perspective to the workshop. It was a true global gathering, with participants and guests from 15+ nationalities together in the same room.

A highlight was the encouraging sharing on “A Journey of Self-Discovery” given by our KCSS alumni guest speaker Mr Payton James Harmon. James shared his inspiring experience on finding one’s path (as well as gave us tips on how to deal with DSE chemistry haha!)
We went on with icebreaking games that got everyone excited, raising their hands high to make a guess on what the emojis stood for. Till and Faustine even initiated a vote for the best waffles, Belgium waffles, US waffles and Hong Kong waffles are all delicious of course!

Then, there was the interactive piñata workshop led by instructor Lili. She guided us through the history, symbolism and technique of piñata-making. International guests from ICE Intercultural Education also joined participants in groups to chat and have cross-cultural conversations when we cut, stuck, glued, and made the piñata together.

Last but not least, we would never miss the tradition of singing along in Spanish, getting blindfolded, and hitting the piñata! With laughter, cheers, and a shower of candies, the piñata finally cracked open — a perfect symbol for how we break through cultural barriers together!

⭐️Vote of Thanks
A special thank you to ICE Intercultural Education for connecting us with such a diverse group of guests, and to PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School for hosting us in their beautiful art studio. Thank you all guests and participants for showing up, the event would not have been the same without you.
💬Participant Reflections
When asked about their experience, here’s what some participants shared:
“It is definitely more than just making a craft. I made friends and even exchanged IGs with others!”
“Breaking the piñata was a lot of fun! Everyone was telling me to go left and right or reach higher. We learnt some Spanish for counting 123 and singing the song.”
“The best part was watching students realize that the guests are just people – curious, funny, and eager to connect, just like them.”
